(Beijing, March 22) The women's final round of the "Good Luck Beijing" 2008 Water Polo China Open witnessed Australia overcoming world champions the United States with a narrow win of 7-6. Host China, for its part, got the edge on Russia with 9-8 to settle for the bronze.
Being the world's top two teams, the United States and Australia gave a world-class performance at Beijing's Ying Tung Natatorium today. As a result, Australia came from behind to clinch the title, while the USA had to be content with the second place.
The USA gained the upper hand over Australia in the first quarter. However, the Australians rallied for a fierce counterattack to tie the score. In the grueling second half of the match Australia managed to beat their US counterparts on a penalty throw two minutes before the final whistle.
Russia was the bronze medalists at the Athens Olympic Games. However, this time they did not send their first-string team to Beijing. As they were well-matched in strength, the bronze-medal match between Russia and host China also turned white-hot, with China playing exceptionally well in the third quarter to eventually claim the much-coveted medal.
