Guangdong Derun collects men's bronze medal

(Beijing, March 23) The last day of the "Good Luck Beijing" 2008 Water Polo China Open saw the final round of the men's division contested at Ying Tung Natatorium, with China's Guangdong Derun (CGD) defeating China's Shanghai (CSH) 10-8 (2:2, 4:3, 2:1, 2:2) to grab the bronze medal.

Shanghai's No.2 Liu Siwei opened the score in the second minute but Guangdong's No.9 Pan Ning managed to tie the score 1-1 one minute later. Then Guangdong's No.7 Zhang Chufeng added one more goal three minutes later and the score was again equaled by Shanghai's No.3 Qiu Yuanzhong on a last-minute fast break.

Players from the two sides took turns at shooting and after a 4-3 run Guangdong Derun managed to led 6-5 into the third quarter.

Both teams showed physical fatigue and the pace of play slowed down. After Lu Lei added one goal for Shanghai in the second minutes, Guangdong's Zhang Junlong rallied to score again in the last minute, followed by another goal from his teammate six seconds before the end of the quarter. 8-6 into the last quarter.

Two minutes into the fourth quarter Guangdong's Zhang Chufeng scored his second goal in the match on a long shot, 9-6. However, Shanghai's Lu Lei and Zhang Jianwen made one each to narrow the deficit to 9-8. Guangdong's Pan Ning then delivered one more goal to secure the team's win with 10-8. This was also the first time in recent years that Guangdong Derun managed to win over Shanghai for the bronze medal.
